Purpose
Exchange 2000/2003 users often wish to forward e-mail sent to their Exchange mailboxes automatically to an external e-mail address (for example, user@yahoo.com). Using AD Users and Computers tool, the Exchange administrator can do that quite easily. Please refer to "How to Configure a Mailbox to Forward Mail to a Mail-Enabled Contact" MS publication for details. See also "Forwarding Mail to an External Recipient" article by Mark Fugatt.
The procedure described in the articles above is pretty simple, but let's suppose that Exchange administrator has to turn on/turn off these forwarding options several times a week for users who are sick or on holiday. Every time when administrator turns that off, the link between the internal user account and the external forwarding address just dropped. To re-establish it, administrator must select the associated external address from the list of Active Directory contacts.
The CentralForwarder for MS Exchange 2000/2003 application is developed to solve this problem. Using the application, you can turn on/turn off e-mail forwarding with a single mouse click.
Limitations
Turning the e-mail forwarding option on or off does not have the immediate result. It will take several minutes before configuration changes actually take effect. In fact, this limitation is not tied with the CentralForwarder application itself. Native MS AD Users and Computers snap-in demonstrates just the same behavior.
Installation
On your Exchange 2000/2003 Server computer or on any Windows 2000 workstation:
1. Select (or create) a user account that is a member of the Domain Admins security group.
2. Log on as that user.
3. Create C:\Program Files\CentralForwarder\ directory.
4. Download CentralForwarder-Demo.zip archive file to C:\Program Files\CentralForwarder\ directory and extract all files.
Testing
1. Run CentralForwarder.exe. Select any mailbox (for example, RRRTest1) which has empty values in the "Deliver to Mbx", "Forward", "Forwarding display name" and "Forwarding e-mail address" columns. Right-click and select "Modify forwarding options".
2. A new window will appear. Click "Forward to:" radio-button and then click "Modify..." button.
3. A new window will appear. Select a recipient to forward (for example, c1 contact, as shown). Click OK to close the window.
4. Make sure the "Deliver messages to both forwarding address and mailbox" is unchecked. Click OK to close the forwarding options window. Note the changes.
5. Wait about five minutes and send a message to RRRTest1. Then check the SMTP address associated with c1 contact and make sure that your e-mail message has been delivered there. Also check that your message has not been delivered to the RRRTest1 mailbox.
6. Mark the checkbox in the "Deliver to Mbx" column for RRRTest1.

7. Unmark the checkbox in the "Forward" column for RRRTest1.

I have tested CentralForwarder with Exchange 2000 SP1/SP2/SP3 on MS Windows 2000 Advanced server.
Uninstallation
1. Navigate to C:\Program Files\CentralForwarder\ directory and delete it.
About this demo version.
The CentralForwarder demo version works only for mailboxes whose names contain "TEST" value.
